Engineering Manager
Pandora is the worlds largest jewllery retailer and is committed to providing an exceptional customer experience. We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Engineering Manager to join our team to lead engineering initiatives across our e-commerce platforms.
About the Role:
The Engineering Manager will be responsible for leading and managing engineering and assurance activities across our global e-commerce platform. Whilst a strong grasp of all aspects of e-commerce is required, this role requires an in-depth understanding of front-end technologies (including Micro Frontends), Javascript frameworks (e.g. React) and headless architecture. Experience with Salesforce Commerce is desirable but not essential.
Whilst the successful candidate will have exposure to microservice ecosystems, API-first, cloud-native, headless applications and headless architectures on a broader basis, they will have a strong preference towards front-end development . The Engineering Manager will devise and implement an organizational engineering strategy, manage engineering processes, and develop software engineering competencies across a number of multi-disciplined product teams.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engineering Leadership
- Lead and manage the engineering team, ensuring high-quality deliveries across e-commerce platforms.
- Seek to understand and improve through data points.
- Strive to act and lead with humility and integrity at all times.
- Develop and implement an organizational engineering strategy aligned with business goals.
- Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and excellence within the engineering team.
- Set high standards of craftsmanship and optimalefficiency, continually raising the bar through consistent skills development practices, talent management, coaching and the effective use of metric frameworks (e.g. SPACE, DORA etc).
- Utilise metrics frameworks to incentivise performance goals in alignment with product line and domain objective key results (OKRs).
- Act as a key contributor and front end subject matter expert alongside peers to ensure the the progressive development of our overall composable e-commerce architecture.
- Manage, enable and lead engineering colleagues, teams and processes to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of technology solutions.
Technical Expertise:
- Lead, oversee and facilitate the development of a hybrid frontend ecosystem encompassing a strategic Micro frontend architecture alongside a server-side rendered platform.
- Provide expert-level technical leadership and guidance in software architecture, code configuration management, and CI/CD tooling.
- Demonstrate efficacy through the continuous adoption and implementation of modern software engineering practices across development, testing and deployment (e.g. trunk-based development, feature flagging, release agility).
- Sparring with management and architecture peers to raise the overall bar across engineering whilst ensuring practices across our front end platforms align with those undertaken within other areas of our composable architecture.
- Raise quality standards through shifting good practice left and effecitively implementing and monitoring quality gates and robust CI/CD pipelines.
- Strive to continuously automate and improve team practices.
Team Development:
- Coach, mentor, and develop internal and partner engineering colleagues, fostering professional growth and development.
- Build a high-performing engineering team through effective recruitment, training, and retention strategies.
- Promote a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
Key Skills and Qualifications:
- 5 years plus experience as an Engineering Manager or similar role within the retail or consumer goods sector.
- 10 years experience within the e-commerce domain as an engineer or engineering leader.
- Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to lead and mentor internal and partner colleagues, treating them as equals.
- An adept people leader with a proven track record bringing teams together and enabling individuals to reach their true potential.
- A track record nurturing internal and external talent to build cohesive, high performing, distributed teams.
- Contextual leadership skills with the ability to operate as an affiliative, servant leader combined with the awareness and skills needed to adapt and give clear, decisive instructions where required.
- Experience managing international teams, with a keen passion for building diverse, inclusive environments.
- An authentic leader adept at balancing empathy with candour and a proven track record coaching and developing others.
- Strong background in leading engineering and assurance across e-commerce platforms.
- In-depth knowledge of software architecture, code configuration management, CI/CD tooling, pipelines, and quality gates.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to devise innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Experience with Agile and DevOps methodologies.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Familiarity with the latest industry trends and emerging technologies in retail and consumer goods.
- Engineering experience developing microservices, backend ecommerce platforms and API-first / cloud-native applications.
