We are seeking an accomplished and visionary leader to take on the pivotal role of Director for Strategy, Planning and Portfolio in our Digital and Technology organisation.

This senior-level position will be responsible for overseeing and driving the successful delivery of digital and technology initiatives across our portfolio – and as part of this ensuring delivery on our Phoenix and Digital Transformation ambitions.


The ideal candidate will possess exceptional leadership skills, a deep understanding of agile and waterfall methodologies, and has a track record of optimizing portfolio & delivery processes through establishing followership and governance.


As the Strategy, Planning and Portfolio Director, you will lead a team of Strategy Managers and Portfolio Managers/Consultants who are on daily basis working across D&T, and you will play a crucial role in evolving our strategic focuses, ways of working and ensuring overall portfolio mgt, delivery, governance, and transparency to key stakeholders.

In addition, your team will provide executive leadership support for key executive meetings and ad hoc analysis. You will work closely with the Global Strategy & Business Development team on sound boarding the overall strategic portfolio health – as we are in strategy execution mode.


Key responsibilities:

Strategy & Portfolio Leadership

  • Lead, mentor and guide a team of Portfolio and Strategy Colleagues
  • Set direction for the team and how we work with Strategy, Planning and Portfolio Mgt in D&T
  • Work closely with a team of Delivery Directors in Delivery & Planning to ensure consistent and effective delivery across the entire portfolio
  • Forster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the team
  • Seek opportunity to provide strategic guidance on key ad hoc focuses for the strategy team (new technology, trends etc. as needed)

Portfolio Transparency & maturity

  • Establish clear and comprehensive portfolio communication strategies, including the creation and presentation of roadmaps, risks, and major dependencies
  • Lead discussions on the health and progress of the portfolio in collaboration with senior

Stakeholders – and bring the strategic lens with an eye to our overall Phoenix strategy

  • Provide strategic leadership to mature our ways of working, with a focus on applying agile and waterfall methodologies to enhance delivery efficiency and effectiveness, this includes how to drive different types of programmes across a hybrid portfolio
  • Drive the adoption and consistency of best practices related to kanbans, backlogs, work breakdown taxonomy and structures, JIRA tooling usage, financial reporting and tracking, delivery metrics, and more – with support from our Agile and Transformation team
  • Champion measuring of outcome and impact from work delivered
  • Ensure delivery on our internal cost transformation programme LEAP – and establish how this can be embedded more into BAU and rest of portfolio over time in collaboration with Finance

Lean Portfolio Management

  • Implement, and refine lean portfolio management processes that spans from strategic direction over funding to delivery and outcome measuring
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align portfolio with strategic objectives and ensure optimal resource allocation
  • Synchronise planning cycles across portfolio allowing visibility for stakeholders on intake windows and capacity commitment – as well as for delivery teams to coordinate cross domain and Product Line dependencies and work

Communication and stakeholder engagement

  • Engage with executive and senior stakeholders to understand their strategic vision and provide transparent visibility into the strategic portfolio
  • Participate in strategic discussions, offering insights and recommendations to enhance portfolio value delivery
  • Facilitate yearly planning process – together with finance & strategy – and ensure key stakeholders are informed about process, plans and prioritization framework

What does it take to succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; Master's degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in digital and technology strategy, project & delivery management, with at least 5 years in leadership roles.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and delivering complex projects and initiatives across diverse teams and functions.
  • Extensive knowledge of agile and waterfall methodologies, with the ability to guide teams in selecting and adapting appropriate approaches
  • Strong proficiency in project management tools – ideally JIRA
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to interact effectively with senior stakeholders – and build compelling storylines
  • Strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to drive process improvement and operational excellence
  • Experience with lean portfolio management principles, practices, and implementation – and ideally with implementing them across a larger organisation
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with a history of fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture – securing followership
  • Strong financial skills and business acumen to assess business cases and business value
  • Certification in project management (PMP, Prince2, etc.) and agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe, etc.) is advantageous

  • Understand how to build and nurture a diverse team – fostering trust and psychological safety to allow everyone to ask for help in time
